Recommendation from Alan Wallace

To whom it may concern:

Joey DiGuglielmo is among the best young journalists — and young people — with whom I've had the pleasure of working during my 25-year career as a reporter, editor and opinion writer. While I was Joey's editor from January 2004 through October 2006 with The Times Express, I greatly appreciated his abilities and talents as the sole reporter for a weekly serving two suburban Pittsburgh communities that share a school district.

Joey was responsible for covering two local governments and that shared school district, including hard-news stories on council and school board issues and police matters. He also was responsible for doing feature stories -- some of which ran exclusively in The Times Express, while others ran simultaneously in The Times Express and five "sister" suburban weeklies. Among his finest stories was one of the latter, in which he told the story of a "cadaver dog," used by authorities to locate bodies, from the dog's point of view.

Joey's ability to develop good working relationships with reliable sources was put to good use as he covered such hot-button issues for local residents as what ultimately became rejection of a proposed Wal-Mart, court battles between rival mayoral candidates, budget and tax concerns and a wave of golden anniversaries celebrated by local institutions during the 50th year since the incorporation of today's Monroeville -- the larger of the two communities in the coverage area -- as Patton Township.

None of this would have been possible if Joey did not possess outstanding work habits, including rock-solid reliability, excellent time-management and interviewing skills, and enthusiasm. His ability to combine those traits with distinctive and delightful writing skills, the perseverance, objectivity and willingness to question elected officials that's necessary to get beyond the surface of local government, and unfailing cognizance of deadlines and the art elements of story packages helped make Joey one of the best I've worked with, period. I wholeheartedly recommend Joey DiGuglielmo for any position he may seek.
